A New Year

A New Year

Chilly weather on the Farm means keeping everyone warm and planning for the coming seasons. It’s been a fairly mild winter so far. The snow has stayed up on Mount Rainier, leaving us with rain and occasional frost here in the foothills. Chickens, turkey, and peafowl are keeping cozy in their coops. As for the garden fauna, a greenhouse lets many sleeping plants live through the cold and also lets cold-weather crops rest for the active time ahead.

We are keeping busy stoking the fires (our Farmhouse, circa 1906, is heated by wood) and planning for lots of seed growing for our rare and specialty plant nursery slated to open this spring. Growing from the well-loved roots of Old Goat Farm, the first green sprigs of new life in this New Year are already starting to appear.

So far, we’ve got some good lettuce and cilantro seed growth. We’ve also got plenty of sleeping perennials, including evergreen false Solomon seal, pulmonaria, sedums, and hellebores, along with galanthus ready to wake up to become fair maids of February. Cyclamens will be ready to bloom in just a few weeks. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.
